2023 - 18 May to 22 Apr 2023: Mundubbera to Monto

17 Apr 2023 - All packed up and ready to hit the road tomorrow. We were supposed to be Caravanning with S&M, however, due to the passing of our friend, international cycle tourist, and caravanning companion, Yvonne, M&S have elected to stay home. And, rightly so, S and Y were very close. RIP Yvonne, you will never be forgotten as long as we are riding and caravanning, you will always be in our happy memories and with us in spirit.

Afternoon drinks were had with other friends and fellow caravanners, K&J, together with an early birthday 'party' for Wendy. We've developed this habit of sleeping in the van on the last night at home. We do this so we can finish off packing the last minute stuff, close all the house up and depart without forgetting anything; so the theory goes!  We've got good lists for just about every type of trip so it's rare that we forget anything.

13 degC at Monto to 28 degC at home,  another gloriously sunny day in QLD We had a discussion this morning, while still in bed, and decided that we would head home today, not because we were not enjoying being out in the van, simply because we have been to most of these places in 2020 and there was nothing new to see. We were also keeping in mind we head off on our France cycle trip in five weeks time, and need to get the house sorted for the Wendy's folks who are coming up to escape the Canberra winter, and to have a Gwebi (Rhodesian Agricultural College) reunion (60years we think). R&T will arrive a few weeks after we leave and stay for a few weeks after the reunions attendees leave. So, we need to ensure the house is up to scratch, and if we don't start now, we will be running around like headless chooks in the days before we depart for France. Day 1: Tue 18 Apr 23 - Home to Mundubbera, 192km

20 deg C at home to 30 deg C at Mundubbera, fine and sunny the while day After a surprisingly decent sleep, we were on the road at 8:30am. There was a lot of traffic on the road between Howard and Childers, however, all were well behaved. We turned left at Childers, and our first stop was at Biggenden for a vanilla slice and a Cornish pastie. Greg thinks these vanilla slices are the best, however, Wendy still rates the ones we had at Ballarat as the best. We didn't take a wander around town as we have seen it a number of times before.  Next stop was at Gayndah for a wander. Whilst we had done Gayndah in 2019, there were still some things that were new to us, such as the Gayndah Art Gallery that was originally a Convent. It is a lovely old building that has been refurbished beautifully. There was not a great deal of art on display but most of it was pretty good stuff, so pleased we made the effort. Day 2: Wed 19 Apr 23 - Mundubbera to Monto, 110km; total towed: 302km

14 degC at Mundubbera to 28 degC at Monto, another excellent QLD day Greg went for an early walk while Wendy semi-prepared the van for departure. As we were parking up yesterday, Wendy heard a noise in the rear passenger side wheel of the van. Thinking the worst (another magnet failure), before we hit the road this morning, Wendy drove whilst Greg listened. Off came the wheel, and thankfully it was only the grease cap that had jiggled loose. Phew!! The one thing we’ve come to expect with caravanning is that there is always something going on with either the van or the vehicle to keep you on your toes. On the road finally, just before 8:30am, and we didn’t stop until we reached Monto. There were only two other campers here,  so we had a choice of sites; we took #5.
